A couple video clips from this week, a little taste of Alaska Freezup   Falls Creek near freezup but still flowing, the next day it was completely froze. I am getting into these video clips, can you tell? Would have been a big thing to setup and take a good still, and I had other goals in mind (like not freezing my ass off for one).   The currents in Turnagain Arm are strong and swift, and now the ice is forming fast, it was moving 3-5 knots here. You can't outrun it if you are on the flats, you can't out paddle it in a Kayak. You just have to watch it from a safe distance, and only play in it at slack tide, and when the ice isn't there. The noise you hear is the wind, the temperature was in the lower teens F. It is chilling to say the least to stand out there for even half a minute now.

An Inferior Mirage (meaning the sky melds into the horizon) muddles the view after the sunset. This is a two frame panorama, as always best viewed large. Or perhaps the experience sharpens the view? In 1973 I registered for the draft, (I was in the last batch to do so), graduated from high school, went off to college and the Movie Lost Horizons came out, a remake of Frank Capra's 1937 film. I didn't go see the movie but my mother did, and she bought the soundtrack album. I fell in love with that album and the adventure of the theme.   So now, still searching for that lost horizon and finding it, if only for photographic instants This music may perhaps seem a departure considering my propensity toward hard rock, but it's really just another layer. This year has been a trilogy above all other years, at least my short thirty some years here,   in that we in Alaska have had a long and wonderful fall, one more season than our usual summer-winter dual. This last week this Trilogy of Seasons quietly closed the door of summer/fall and opened the door to winter. The season is how I mark my time mostly, so this milestone is noticed by me every year, more so I’d say as my time here goes along.   Let it begin, yes that is ice staring to rim the shores of Cook Inlet When the mountains turn white in the Chugach, and are capped with fresh cornices, and the ponds and marshes are all froze, and the swans have all flown, it is the end of season, that time is now. The sun sets before 5pm now here, one of my last shots in October was the breath of middle earth, Mount Redoubt still steaming in this 30 second exposure. But now it is November and winter is here suddenly, the season that belongs to ...
