-+Big Stone II Stopped in its Tracks
The news has been out for days now. I must still be stunned or I would have found something to write before now, right? Well, here's what the good folks at Clean Water Action had to say - Big Stone II - Stopping the Coal Fired Power Plant That Couldn't be Stopped. And Clean Up the River Environment (CURE) upon hearing of the demise of Big Stone II quickly generated 'The Energy Matrix' cheering the fact that we now have a 'game changer,' an opportunity to create a clean energy future for the Minnesota River Valley and beyond. Hooray! Hmmm, maybe that's why I was celebrating instead of writing?!   Congratulations and hope to one and all, and especially to the seventh generation.
-+Missing Your Bacon? Try This
I don't know about you, but I remember waking up to the smell of bacon frying from the cast iron skillet back in the day when bacon was not only considered ok but a treasured Sunday morning delight. Well, it's been awhile since those days but the good feeling that comes with smelling that smell stays with me yet. This morning I happened accidentally upon creating a bit of the bacon smell and taste in an unexpected way, and I didn't have to break the bank during these tough financial times:   Slept in late on a Saturday morning Nothing in the cupboards, opened the fridge Mostly bare except for a carton of eggs and half a red onion Heated up the skillet, poured in the olive oil Chopped and added a half-cup of onion Fried until crispy brown, hinging on blackened Added a farm fresh egg, beaten Stirred with onion until softly cooked, flipped once to finish Toasted my favorite bread lightly (rye) Enjoyed 'almost' flavored bacon and egg late morning sandwich with ...
-+Bill Gates Building a Coal Empire - What?
It was a difficult choice. Should I categorize this under 'News and Politics' or 'Health and Wellness' ...or add a totally new category - What?   Bill Gates' Cascade Investment - Company Profile on LinkedIn shows a new hire. While this is not so unusual, what baffles me completely is his penchant to build up his personal portfolio with dirty burning, CO2 spewing, mercury poisoning, acid raining contaminating coal. What? Yes.   Cascade not only wanted and got bigger stakes in Otter Tail Power, up to 20% from 9%, FERC Order Issued Oct 2- Cascade is also a holding company through its indirect ownership interests in Optim Energy, LLC, which includes the 305 MW lignite-fired power plant Twin Oaks 160 miles northwest of Houston., and more. You can check out Bill Gates' mini-coal-empire building at PNM Resources Inc.   Does Bill have a thing for coal? It would seem so, which is strange considering he claims to care about the health and well being of ...

-+A New Day for Big Stone
I moved cross country last year from the Great Upper Midwest to the Pacific West Coast but my heart and home remain in rural Minnesota on the border of the Dakotas. And great news arrived in San Francisco yesterday, "Otter Tail Power withdraws from Big Stone II" National Deputy Director, Marie Zellar from Clean Water Action called to say. Wow. Did I ever believe that I would see the day? That maybe, just maybe Bill Gates came to his senses and saw that building a coal-fired power plant did not make sense or 'cents' no matter how one looked at it? Yes. It's a new day for Big Stone, for the people, the air, the land, the waters flowing from the start of the Little Minnesota in South Dakota into Big Stone Lake then down the Minnesota river to the mighty Mississipp. Cheers! Bye, bye BSII!
