To read critically, you should take the attitude and tone of the text into consideration. The writer can signal his or her attitude and tone from the words used in the passage. Actually, attitude or tone of the passage can be classified into three levels: positive, negative, and neutral. When good things are mentioned in the text, it means that the writer has a positive attitude or the text has a positive tone. On the other hand, when bad things are expressed, it means that the writer has a negative attitude or negative tone. In some cases, one text might have both negative and positive attitude; therefore, you have to pay attention to words used in the texts, e.g. "Sometimes I see what the media writers.
