-+ Tom Murray: Photographer of the Month
Tom Murray has been named ZipcodeZoo Photographer of the Month for March , 2009 for his contribution of over 9,000 fabulous photos to ZipcodeZoo. Tom's insect shots are remarkable, with perfectly focused detail of the smallest parts of the smallest insects, and insects in flight and in action -- having sex, laying eggs, and eating each other. Birds and mammals seem to pose for the camera, whether they are newborn foxes or fledgling birds. Tom's identifications note sex, mite infestations, and other details the casual observer might miss. Tom's skill with the camera and skill in identifications will be of great value to naturalists around the world.
-+ Global Trends
ZipcodeZoo has added a section of papers which examine the long-term past and future of our planet, tracking changing population, temperature, greenhouse gases, biodiversity, and other important factors. A special paper begins an examination of Tipping Points, the idea that the earth's warming has become self-perpetuating, and can no longer be stopped by reducing carbon emissions or other actions. We will be using publicly available datasets for our numbers, and Mathematica and our own tools to do the modeling. See the new section here.
-+ New Support for Videos
We've improved our mechanism for displaying videos, and have added hundreds of videos to our pages. For an example, see our African Lion.
-+ Donations Needed!
ZipcodeZoo needs to raise $12,000 to reach our goal of $35,000 by year end in order to continue operation in 2009. We are over half way to that goal now, but need your help urgently. To donate, visit our Get Involved! page.
-+ Thumbnails
ZipcodeZoo has improved its photo thumbnail display technology, and updated pages for 75,485 species. Users can now choose to view thumbnails in any of 4 sizes, and thumbnails all size without distortion. A mouse-over of a thumbnail reveals the photographer's name and caption, and a tip on whether clicking the thumbnail will reveal an image that fits within the user's screen, or is oversized, allowing for panning and zooming. For an example, see the thumbnails page for Creel's Calico Sweet Pepper Bush.
