Chef Nathin Bye, the man in the kitchen at Wildflower Grill, is in Vancouver this weekend to compete in the national Gold Medal Plates championship. Bye, who finished first at the Gold Medal Plates competition in Edmonton in October, will be going fork-to-fork with some of the country's best chefs - from Vancouver's Rob Feenie (Cactus Club) to Toronto's David Lee (Nota Bene). There will be a black box competition, a contest to build a dish around a mystery bottle of wine and a grand finale Saturday night. Gold Medal Plates is a fundraiser for the Canadian Olympic and Paralympic teams. The Edmonton competition saw Chef Sonny Sung of Bistecca take third place, and Blair Lebsack of Madison's Grill capture second spot.

Congrats to chef Julianna Mimande, designer Gabe Wong and shooter Zachary Ayotte, the talent behind the new Edmonton cookbook, We eat together. The book is an homage to the local food community, with recipes written or collected by Mimande, and photos by Ayotte. At $40, it's a pricey little beast, but worth the coin. There are wonderful stories about various producers honoured in the book - from Irvings Farm Fresh to The Jam Lady - as well as excellent recipes and mouth-watering photos. The foodie community came out to d'Lish, where the launch was held, in full force. Chefs included Nate Box, Sebastian Lysz and Kevin Ostapek. Food writers Jennifer Cockrall-King (a.k.a. Food Girl) and Sharon Yeo (Only Here for the Food) were there to enjoy tasty nibbles, plus organic wine provided by En Sante Winery (one of the producers in the book). I had a golden glass of honey mead and watched the room around me bustling with cooks, kids and those who appreciate both. It was a ...

Okay, it's not much of a contest - no particular skill is required, just a listening ear. The first person who e-mails me after my radio appearance (on at 4:40 p.m.) with the correct answer to my (semi) skill testing question can win a copy of Eric Akis new cookbook, entitled Everyone Can Cook for Celebrations. Just tell me the name of the person hosting today's edition of the afternoon drive home show. E-mail me at t lfaulder@thejournal.canwest.com and leave me your contact information - and you have to be able to pick the book up at the downtown office of The Edmonton Journal.

Ah, yes, it's here again. Double digit temperatures notwithstanding, it's time to think about Christmas giving. Today on Radio Active (CBC radio's local afternoon slow), I'm talking about my favourite cookbooks for holiday presents. I've got three I quite like. The first is by Erik Akis, who writes about food for the Victoria Times Colonist. He's also frequently featured in The Edmonton Journal. His new book is called Everyone Can Cook for Celebrations: Seasonal Recipes for Festive Occasions. Eric has been a food writer for the Victoria Times Colonist for more than 10 years, and we feature a lot of his work in the Edmonton Journal. I don’t know him, but maybe it's because I see his work in the paper frequently, I feel as if he understands my life. (I like to fuss over my cooking, but not too much.) His previous books include: Everyone Can Cook, Everyone Can Cook Appetizers ,and so on. This book is organized by season, i.e. Celebrate Spring, or Summer Long Weekends, and ...

Julianna Mimande, local caterer and advocate of local food production, has a new cookbook coming out. The launch was scheduled for The Artery, but the location has now changed. Now the launch party is at d'Lish Bistro & Meal Assembly Studio (10418-124 Street) on November 25, 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. We Eat Together features the photos and design talent of Zach Ayotte and Gabe Wong.
