The Regina Pats kicked off their West Coast road swing with a dramatic 3-2 shootout win over the Kootenay Ice on Friday night. Matt Strueby scored the shootout winner for the Pats, who will have a tight turnaround as they travel all the way to Tri-City for a game Saturday night against the Americans. Kootenay jumped out to a 2-0 lead with first-period goals by Joey Leach and Kevin King. Regina’s Jordan Eberle potted the lone goal of the second frame, then Kyle Mulder tied it up with 5:12 left in the third period by redirecting Colten Teubert’s shot past goaltender Todd Mathews. Pats netminder Damien Ketlo stopped 27 of 29 shots, plus three of four in the shootout. Regina’s first two attempts in the breakaway session — by Eberle and Jordan Weal, of all people — were both stopped. Kootenay’s Dustin Sylvester missed the net, but Max Reinhart gave the home team a 1-0 lead. Brett Leffler replied to keep Regina alive, after which Ketlo stopped Matt Fraser. Strueby gave the Pats the lead and ...

REGINA — Matt Strueby and Garrett Mitchell scored two goals apiece on Tuesday night to lead the Regina Pats to a 5-3 win over the Edmonton Oil Kings before 3,757 fans at the Brandt Centre. The victory snapped a three-game losing skid for the Pats (11-11-3-0), who climbed back to the .500 mark in their final contest before a six-game road swing, which begins Friday against the Kootenay Ice. Matt Delahey had Regina’s other goal while Jordan Weal added two assists. The home team jumped out to a 2-0 lead, only to have Edmonton come back and tie it up. Delahey scored to give the Pats a 3-2 lead in the second period, then Strueby (eventual game-winner) and Mitchell polished it off in the third. Strueby's second marker came shortly after he stepped out of the penalty box following a puzzling goalie interference call. Logan Proulx, Tomas Vincour (penalty shot) and Tyler Hlookoff (a late marker to round out the scoring) replied for the Oil Kings (8-12-2-4), who got 29 saves from Torrie Jung. ...

Two members of the Regina Pats are among the top-rated WHLers for the 2010 NHL entry draft. Central Scouting released its preliminary rankings on Tuesday, with Pats centre Jordan Weal listed 10th out of the top 25 WHLers eligible for next year’s draft and defenceman Brandon Davidson ranked 22nd. Weal, 17, is off to a great start this season with 12 goals and 32 points after 24 games. He helped the Canadian under-18 team win a gold medal at this year’s Memorial of Ivan Hlinka tournament in the Czech Republic. Last season, Weal had 16 goals and 70 points in 65 games en route to being named the Eastern Conference rookie of the year. Davidson has been a diamond in the rough for Regina. An undrafted list pickup, the 18-year-old blueliner was leading all Pats defencemen with 16 points after 21 games, including a team-best plus-minus of +11. Davidson’s 16 points rank him third in the league among rookie D-men and his 15 assists are second among all WHL rookies. Prince George Cougars forward ...
