When preparing for the new school year, there are some effective and easy steps you can take to ensure that going back to school has as little impact on the environment as possible. By following some of these green tips, you can save money and take steps to become earth friendly. Remember to continue practicing a green lifestyle throughout the school year too! To and from school: -Ride your bike -Walk -Carpool -Take the bus School Supplies: -go through last years school supplies and use those instead of buying new supplies that you don’t need -if you need to buy binders, buy cardboard or canvas instead of plastic -buy recycled paper -buy pens and pencils that are eco-friendly or use refillable pens and pencils - for university and college students, buy used text books if possible, which are both cheaper and better for the environment than buying new (and don’t forget your reusable coffee mug!) -reuse last years backpack -avoid school supply overload, only buy supplies ...
-+The Green Team joins the PNE Green Scene

On August 29 th , 2009, the Metropolis at Metrotown Green Team, powered by the Vancouver Sun, attended the PNE in Vancouver. The team spent the day handing out over 300 reusable shopping bags to attendees and enjoying the many attractions the PNE has to offer. The team was happy to join in with the excitement of the PNE and gave bags to people standing in line for rides, playing carnival games, visiting the petting zoo, and exploring all the amazing different kinds of food available. The Green Team was excited to come across the PNE Green Scene, a booth dedicated to explaining the workings of the PNE Sustainability Committee whose mandate is to “promote sustainability through the Pacific National Exhibition by developing awareness and creating practical solutions while using feasible initiatives to minimize the PNE’s impact on the environment.” Some of the initiatives presented by the PNE Sustainability Committee include: a blue bag service for exhibitors which ...

The Metropolis at Metrotown Green Team, powered by The Vancouver Sun, is happy to announce the winners of the Greenest Household Contest: Liz and Geoff Hancock from Maple Ridge! Liz and Geoff are the recipients of a trip for two to Whistler as well as a $1000 Metropolis at Metrotown gift card. The Greenest Household Contest began on June 6 th , 2009. Members of the community were asked to submit a 150 word essay on what steps they take to make their households green. Judges from the Green Team, Metropolis at Metrotown and The Vancouver Sun went over each entry and decided on five finalists. Once the finalists had been chosen, members of the Green Team traveled to each of the households to verify the entries, as well as meet the finalists and learn a few handy green tips. The public was then invited to vote online for their favourite finalist, and it was these votes that determined our winning household! On Saturday, July 25, The Metropolis at Metrotown Green Team, powered by The Vancouver Sun hit the streets of downtown Vancouver to promote The Vancouver Sun’s Greenest Household Contest. The team handed out over 500 reusable shopping bags to pedestrians, and even to a few curious drivers stuck in traffic. The team showed up at various locations, including Commercial Drive and Robson Street. The team was out in full force to encourage people to vote online for their choice of winner of the Greenest Household Contest. The contest, which began last month, features five green households previously selected by judges from Metropolis at Metrotown, The Vancouver Sun, and the Green Team. Five finalists have been chosen for The Vancouver Sun’s Greenest Household Contest! Each contestant showed an incredible dedication to living a green lifestyle. The choices that each household makes are always eco-conscious, and although difficult at times, are always rewarding. Each household is incredibly passionate about living a green lifestyle, and encouraging this lifestyle within their community. These five households take the meaning of eco-friendly a step further by doing everything they can to live green.
