Genetic tests shows it reverses aging process in elderly tissues Pumping iron can literally rejuvenate seniors' muscles -- reversing the aging process within the tissue and improving people's ability to perform physical tasks, new research shows. In the study, American and Canadian researchers examined gene expression in the thigh muscle tissue of 25 healthy older adults over age 65 (average age 70) who performed resistance training twice a week for six months. They then compared the results to tissue taken from younger adults, ages 20 to 35. Each training session was an hour-long and involved 30 contractions of each targeted muscle group. Reporting in the May 23 issue of the online journal PLoS One, the team found that resistance training resulted in a reversal of the "genetic fingerprint" of muscle tissue in older adults, returning them to levels that are similar to those seen in younger adults. Missing meals is a bad idea, AARP says Losing weight can a daunting task. But there are sensible ways to go about it. Drink a lot of water, and drink a glass or two before a meal to help you feel more full and eat less. To fill you up without extra calories, eat foods that are rich in fiber and water, such as fruits and vegetables. Track what and how much you eat by keeping a food journal. Don't give up, and remember that every little bit you do helps move you closer to your goal.
-+Health Tip: Suggestions for Stretching

An important part of any workout Stretching before exercise is a great way to warm up your muscles and prevent injury. But stretching the wrong way can cause problems, too. Here are guidelines on how to stretch safely, courtesy of the Women's Heart Foundation: Stretch for at least five to seven minutes before exercising. Keep muscles relaxed, and stretch slowly. Never bounce your muscles while stretching. Stretch until you feel some tension in your muscles, but never until it hurts. Hold each stretch for at least 15 seconds, and breathe slowly and deeply. Relax, then stretch again for a few seconds longer at each stretch. Repeat each stretch several times.
