-+Nursing Home Residents Benefit From PALS With PETS Therapy Program
5 days ago
Most people think that retirement means sitting back and taking it easy every day but don't tell that to Linda B. Being a therapy dog handler and a volunteer with the PALS with PETS program keeps the Whitehall resident extremely busy these days. Linda is one of 12 new recruits who volunteer their time and their animals for a pet therapy program offered through Pittsburgh-based health insurer Highmark Inc. PALS with PETS is part of a new initiative that aims to help overcome the effects of loneliness, a very common problem among nursing home residents. Many older Americans living in long-term care facilities are not permitted to have pets. PALS with PETS offers nursing home residents the companionship they may lack in a nursing home environment. Many residents report feeling calmer, are more optimistic and have a desire to communicate more verbally with others after visiting with a pet therapy animal.
