Ron Artest, the 30-year-old, first-year starter with the Los Angeles Lakers, may yet prove to be a crucial piece of an improved championship puzzle. But those who are counting on one of the league's most explosive personalities to avoid controversy with his fifth NBA team may want to temper their expectations. In a lengthy interview for the December 7 issue of Sporting News magazine, Artest—best known as the central figure in the infamous Malice at the Palace in 2004—bared all, including a startling admission that he drank alcohol during games as a member of the Chicago Bulls, for whom he played from 1999-2002. "I used to drink Hennessy … at halftime," Artest says in the interview, which hits newsstands this week. "I (kept it) in my locker. I'd just walk to the liquor store (near the stadium) and get it." Artest speaks openly in the interview on many other sensitive topics. Ron Artest admitted that he was a 'head case' when he broke into ...Unknown 4 days ago
Sporting News staff reports On the brink of tying the NBA record for most losses to start a season, the Nets will fire coach Lawrence Frank after the team returns from its game Sunday against the Lakers, Yahoo! Sports reports. The firing would likely take place Monday, and the plan is for Nets GM Kiki Vandeweghe to become the interim coach, though assistant John Loyer would also be an option, according to the report. The new coach likely will be behind the bench Wednesday against the Mavericks. Nets management wanted to let some key players come back from injury before deciding to fire Frank. However, the returns of Devin Harris and Courtney Lee have not stopped the losing, and the front office believes Frank has lost the team's support, according to the report. A 17th consecutive Nets loss Sunday night in Los Angeles would tie the mark for season-starting futility set by the Miami Heat (1988-89) and Los Angeles Clippers (1999). The skid contrasts with ...

Associated Press LOS ANGELES -- Aaron Brooks scored a career-high 33 points, including five 3-pointers, and the Houston Rockets beat the Los Angeles Lakers 101-91 on Sunday night, sending them to a second consecutive loss. The NBA champion Lakers were coming off a 105-79 drubbing at Denver two nights earlier only to have another team they vanquished in last season's title run show them up at home, where they got booed. Aussie David Andersen added a career-high 19 for the Rockets, who lost 103-102 at home in overtime in the teams' first meeting earlier this month. Bryant scored 41 points in that game, but he had just 18 Sunday. Ron Artest, who went to Los Angeles around the time Trevor Ariza went to Houston in July, added 22 points. Andrew Bynum had 21 points and 11 rebounds. The Lakers got a combined 12 points out of starters Lamar Odom and Derek Fisher. Ariza received his NBA championship ring from Bryant and Fisher before the game, which may have ...

Associated Press AUBURN HILLS, Mich. (AP) -- Dirk Nowitzki scored 25 points, and rookie Rodrique Beaubois added 14 points on 6-for-6 shooting to help the Dallas Mavericks beat Detroit 95-90 on Sunday night, snapping the Pistons' winning streak at three games. Drew Gooden had 11 points and 11 rebounds, and Shawn Marion also had 11 points, and Jason Kidd added 10 points and seven assists for the Mavericks. Rodney Stuckey led the Pistons with 28 points, and Will Bynum had 27, including 17 in the fourth quarter. Ben Gordon, though, went 1 for 16 and missed a 3-pointer that would have tied it with 2 seconds left. The Pistons led late in the third quarter, but a turnover let the Mavericks get back-to-back dunks at the end of the period for 71-66. Detroit tied it at 78 with 6 minutes left, but Nowitzki answered with a three-point play. After Charlie Villaneuva made a free throw for Detroit, Nowitzki made a jumper and Jason Terry hit a 3-pointer to give the ...

Wearing a pair of oversized spectacles, LeBron James met with the media Friday before the Cavaliers' game against the Knicks and his only visit to Madison Square Garden this regular season. After a couple of innocuous questions, James was asked by reporters, including Sporting News' Bill Eichenberger, about his plans once he becomes a free agent. As usual, James was careful to leave all his options open. But he did say how much he enjoys playing at The Garden and how important he thinks it is for the health of the NBA that the Knicks again become one of its elite teams. Q: Did you catch the parade? LeBron James: Nah. I didn't get the opportunity. I was asleep, trying to catch up on my rest. But I heard it was great. Congratulations to the Yankees. Q: Are you sore a little bit today after the falls you took in last night's loss to the Bulls? LJ: Yeah, I'm sore a little bit. I've had bumps and bruises all throughout my career. It won't stop me from being the guy that I ...
